Existing Australian home ready for an energy rating assessment

A rating and certificate for a home that is already built

You can request an assessment for a freestanding house, semi-detached house or terrace, townhouse or duplex, or an individual apartment.

Requests can also be made for owner-occupied, rental and investment properties. We review the property scope, required permissions, access and assessor availability before confirming an assessment.

This service does not cover new-home, BASIX, major-renovation or National Construction Code compliance ratings or certificates.

Why people request a Home Energy Rating

Understand comfort and home performance

See modelled information about how your home’s design, fixed appliances and onsite energy systems affect its overall performance.

The certificate does not reproduce your household’s actual energy use or bills.

Plan renovations or upgrades

Use the rating and tailored guidance to decide what may be worth investigating before spending on improvements.

Any result depends on the work completed and how the home is used.

Prepare for a refinancing or finance discussion

Use the certificate as property-performance information in a conversation with your broker or lender.

Acceptance and eligibility depend on the specific lender and product. Home Energy Ratings Australia does not provide credit or eligibility advice.

Understand your home before selling or renting

A current certificate can help demonstrate your home’s energy performance to buyers or renters and support a more transparent listing.

In some cases, the energy-efficient features it documents, or improvements made after the assessment, may contribute to the property’s market appeal and value.

Outcomes depend on the property and market, and a higher sale price, rent or stronger demand is not guaranteed.

What your certificate shows

The assessment produces one Home Energy Rating Certificate with two different ratings.

Home Energy Rating

A rating from 0 to 100+ that estimates the home’s overall energy use, including its design, fixed appliances and any onsite solar generation or battery storage.

Star Rating

A rating out of 10 that estimates how well the home’s design and construction maintain comfortable indoor temperatures in the local climate.

Estimated home performance

The certificate includes estimated annual energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, information about fixed appliances, a comfort indication and renewable-energy information where relevant.

Tailored guidance

The certificate includes upgrade guidance relevant to the assessed home. These results are modelled estimates. They are not your actual bills and do not guarantee future savings, comfort or upgrade results.

About Home Energy Ratings Australia

Frequently asked questions

What is a Home Energy Rating for an existing home?

It is an onsite assessment of a home that has already been built. An appropriately accredited assessor records the home and its fixed appliances, models the information in accredited software and issues the certificate.

Understand the certificate

What will I receive after the assessment?

You receive a certificate with two ratings, modelled energy information and tailored upgrade guidance. The results are estimates, not a prediction of your actual bills or a guaranteed outcome.

Who completes the assessment and issues the certificate?

An appropriately accredited existing-home assessor completes the technical assessment and issues the certificate.

Home Energy Ratings Australia checks the assessor’s relevant accreditation, manages your request, quote, payment and allocation, and remains the escalation contact.

How long does the home visit usually take?

A typical onsite visit takes two to three hours, depending on the home’s size and complexity.

This is the expected visit duration, not a promise of the total time from request to certificate.

Can apartments and rental properties be assessed?

You can submit a request for an individual apartment or a tenant-occupied property.

Apartment-building common areas use a different assessment pathway. We review property scope, permissions, consent, access and assessor availability before confirming an assessment.

Can a rating support refinancing, selling or home-upgrade decisions?

The certificate may inform these discussions and decisions. Lender criteria, the property, completed work and market conditions determine the outcome; a rating does not guarantee approval, rates, savings, value or another result.

Is an assessor available in my area?

Requests can be submitted from any Australian location.

We review each request and contact you to confirm assessor availability, the full price and proposed timing. Submitting a request does not guarantee service availability in your area.
